Protests Hit Several Cities of Tunisia Over Enforced Austerity

Following a series of violent incidents, including attacks on government buildings, the Tunisian Defense Ministry announced the deployment of some 2,000 soldiers. Tunisian authorities say the number of people detained in the wave of violent protests to sweep the country since Monday has risen to almost 800.

Activists and opposition politicians appealed for fresh demonstrations in the capital, Tunis, on Friday and on Sunday, the seventh anniversary of the toppling of authoritarian president Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, the first leader to fall in the 2011 "Arab Spring" protests that swept the region.

Tunisian police have arrested more than 770 people since anti-austerity protests broke out this week in the North African country, according to state media and the United Nations human rights office.

Nearly 800 people have been arrested for vandalism and violence such as throwing petrol bombs at police stations, the interior ministry said on Friday.

Protests were held over rising prices of fuels, mobile phone fees, cosmetics and internet tariffs, and the new finance law which increases certain taxes.

It is noted that all the protests that have been ongoing since Monday, January 8, arrested more than 600 people, about half of them in the last day.

Defendants proved their involvement in looting and arson across several provinces amid national demonstrations protesting price hikes, said Chibani in a statement. "Yesterday protesters burned down two police stations, they looted shops, banks and damaged property in many cities", Chibani said.

Protesters marched peacefully Saturday in the city of Sidi Bouzid against the government's austerity measures, TAP reported.

While the other revolutions have descended into violence or given way to authoritarianism, Tunisia is widely seen as a success story of the Arab Spring.

December 16, 2017: The Afaq Tunis Party, a partner in the country's governing coalition, announces its decision to withdraw from the government, saying the budget approved by parliament "lacks the social and economic vision to meet the needs of the people".
