Japan refuses South Korea’s call to do more for ‘comfort women

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said yesterday that he can not accept Seoul's demand that Tokyo take further measures - including another apology - over its wartime use of " comfort women".

He travels to Estonia's Baltic neighbors Latvia and Lithuania on Saturday. He is the first sitting Japanese leader to visit these countries.

Tokyo has been increasingly anxious about potential cyberthreats from North Korea and China, and is looking to learn from Estonia, whose public institutions and private companies were hit by a large-scale cyberattack in 2007. North Atlantic Treaty Organisation maintains a cyberdefense base there today.

Despite a recent cooling of tensions in the run-up to the Winter Olympics in South Korea, Shinzo Abe has insisted on "maximising pressure" on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programmes.

"Estonia and Japan are separated by thousands of kilometres, but tightly connected by a digital umbilical cord", Ratas said, adding that "Japan will soon become a contributing participant with regard to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Center of Excellence, which is located in Tallinn".

Another goal is advancing public-private linkups in the cyber realm.

Thousands stranded after more heavy snow in the Alps
Heavy snowfall closed down the famed Zermatt resort in Switzerland Tuesday, leaving almost 13,000 tourists stranded there. He had been skiing with his family but went for a last run on his own, despite worsening weather, and failed to return.

Abe also met with Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid over discussions on EU-Japan relations and bilateral trade, accompanied by a business delegation with several dozen representatives from Japanese companies.

The issue of women forced into sexual slavery for Japanese troops in World War II has roiled relations between the neighbours - both of them United States allies and both threatened by nuclear-armed North Korea - for decades.

Bulgaria has just assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Romania and its low-priced labor have caught the eye of a number of Japanese businesses envisioning new manufacturing bases.

Abe is due to return to Japan on Wednesday. He works to engage more with small and medium-sized countries with which Japan has not conducted much top-level diplomacy before. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary later played down the report, saying it was not yet decided.
