Willie Taggart has maintained that he was open, honest, and transparent with everyone at OR as he contemplated and eventually took the job at Florida State.

As Willie Taggart sat in his home Monday night, weighing the offer with his wife from Florida State to leave OR and become the Seminoles' next head football coach, in walked his 16-year-old son, Willie Taggart Jr., with a piece of advice for his dad. Taggart, however, is just the third Florida State head coach since 1976, which was the first season for former Seminoles coaching legend Bobby Bowden.

It is helpful to remember both sides of the equation when a coach bolts for seemingly greener pastures and, in this case, at least one former OR player believes he was personally wronged by Taggart's exit.

Taggart emerged as FSU's top choice after coach Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M last week.

Taggart also hopes to return Florida State's defense to the tenacious group he was enamored with as a youngster. "We want to have a diverse pool, a broad pool, and we will have that".

"He said to me ... and I'm sorry if I get a little emotional here, folks", Taggart said Wednesday, wiping away tears.

The Ducks went 7-5 in Taggart's lone season in Eugene, an improvement of three wins over their down 2016 campaign. "I wanted him to come here, too", Gloria Taggart said.

Leavitt had a more successful run building South Florida with 95-57 record in 13 seasons as head coach, but he was sacked in 2010 after being accused of hitting a player.

"This is not a rebuild, it's a realignment".

"It was really nice walking onto the field this morning, and walking to the 50-yard line, like, 'Yes, I made it.' " Taggart said. We're not going to make excuses. Taggart finished his college career as a Walter Payton Award finalist twice and eventually became one of only four players in Western Kentucky history to have his jersey retired.

The person says Taggart has called a team meeting to inform his OR players he is heading to Tallahassee to replace Jimbo Fisher. "The timing is probably not right, but it's never right when it's time to leave". "I know this is hard for him, hard for my family, moving once again". The next day he tweeted - before deleting it - more: "Lost all words I could've been down the street from my house but came here off the strength of what you said". "When he expressed this was his dream job, that did it for me". I wanted to come here and play.
