Despite the attempts to derail the tree lighting ceremony on Friday it went off without a hitch

The annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Sea Girt was threatened earlier this week when wires were severed, WNBC reported.

But, not long after the damage was done, police stumbled upon the true criminal - a squirrel. One resident called the vandals 'rats, ' and it turns out, they weren't far off. Police say a squirrel is responsible for ruining Christmas lights.

Friday's ceremony occurred as planned but on Saturday morning, police said they had caught the perpetrator.

"The Sea Girt Police Department is proud to report that the case of our broken holiday lights has been solved", the Sea Girt Police Department wrote on their Facebook page.
