Toyota Earns 11 IIHS 2018 Safety Awards

Toyota Earns 11 IIHS 2018 Safety Awards

Fifteen model year 2018 cars and SUVs earned the highest safety honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Another 47 vehicles earned the next-tier Top Safety Pick award with Toyota producing the most vehicles on that list, followed by Hyundai with nine. "Manufacturers have been taking this issue seriously since we first shed light on it, and we're confident that good small overlap protection will become the norm on the passenger side, just as it has on the driver side".

Of the hundreds of auto models on the road today, only 15 have earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2018 due to tougher safety requirements when it comes to passenger side front collisions.

IIHS has been recognizing vehicles with TOP SAFETY PICK since the 2006 model year to help consumers identify vehicles with the highest safety ratings without having to wade through information about individual tests. This institute conducts crash tests and evaluates automobile safety standards.

"Drivers expect that their passengers, who are often family, will be protected just as well as they are", IIHS President Adrian Lund said in a statement.

And just a notch below was the Forester and Crosstrek earning the Top Safety Pick award when equipped with EyeSight and LED steering responsive headlights. The highly-rated headlights, for example, do not come standard on base models and many vehicles lack crash avoidance technology. The institute also tests headlight systems where IIHS engineers measure the reach of a vehicle's headlights on straight roads and on curves. Automakers have pledged to make it a standard feature by 2022. For instance, automatic braking is a key requirement for the getting the "Top Pick Plus" rating, and in most vehicles, that comes at a significant price increase. If the pattern holds, they'll have to score a good rating next year to make the 2019 list. Hyundai, also the owner of the Kia and Genesis brands, produced six models earning the top award, while Subaru has four, the IIHS said in announcing its annual list.
