Democrats have said Trump's relationship with the bank is crucial in the Russia investigation

While the guilty plea of former national-security adviser Michael Flynn indicates that Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe is drawing closer than ever to those in Donald Trump's family, the special counsel's office has also reportedly set its sights on the one thing in this world that the president cherishes even more: his money. We have official confirmation that the Trump finances subpoena was never sent, and we even know why.

Deutsche Bank for months has rebuffed calls by Democratic lawmakers to provide more transparency over the roughly $300 million Trump owed to the bank for his real estate dealings prior to becoming president.

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd disputed that account, saying he had been told by Deutsche Bank that no such subpoena had been issued.

"The Washington Post and The New York Times reported Saturday that a lead FBI investigator on the Mueller probe, Peter Strzok, was demoted this summer after it was discovered he'd sent anti-Trump texts to a mistress", the Journal said.

News of the Deutsche Bank subpoena may escalate Trump's vitriol toward investigators, which over the past week has included publicly attacking the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose reputation he declared to be " in tatters".

It was reported earlier that as part of his probe into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, Mr Mueller asked Deutsche Bank to share data on accounts held by Mr Trump and his family.

Handelsblatt said it was not clear whether the records demand sought information regarding US President Donald Trump or on other members of his circle.

In February, The Guardian reported Deutsche Bank reviewed Trump's accounts to see if there were any "suspicious connections" to Russian Federation but didn't find any links.

"No subpoena has been issued or received", White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a briefing.

Robert Mueller has made a decision to hit the president where it hurts most: in his bank account.

Earlier this year, Mr Trump said pursuing his personal finances would be a breach of Mr Mueller's role as special counsel.

ABC News didn't even bother to mention the statement denying the existence of the subpoena.

There is no public indication of precisely why Mueller subpoenaed the bank.

Deutsche Bank has been served.

Failing to find two separate sources is often what leads professional news organizations to run with untrue stories.

Mr Trump sued the bank and other lenders in 2008, demanding $US3 billion ($3.9 billion) in damages, claiming they broke agreements in the construction and financing of a Chicago hotel.
