Derrick Johnson, the organization's president, said in a statement that Mr. Trump's record on "the protection and enforcement of civil rights have been abysmal and his attendance is an affront to the veterans of the civil rights movement".

"After careful consideration and conversations with church leaders, elected officials, civil rights activists, and many citizens of our congressional districts", the statement read, "we have decided not to attend or participate in the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum".

"The president hopes others will join him in recognizing that the movement was about removing barriers and unifying Americans of all backgrounds", she said. The protest will be mostly silent and located a few blocks from the two new Mississippi Museums, so as not to draw attention from the celebration.

But the Atlanta Democrat said Thursday afternoon that we would reconsider if Trump chooses not to attend the event.

Katie Blount, director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, said the department looks forward to celebrating the museum's opening.

Trump signs proclamation for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation honoring National Pearl Harbor Day . He said the attack was a "bad mistake of misjudging" America.

"I'm the same age as Trump". "If he could, he would wipe all us right off the map".

That's right: The president thinks it's unfortunate that Lewis would not honor the sacrifice made by civil right leaders such as, well, Lewis. NAACP Mississippi chapter president Charles Hampton asked Bryant to rescind the invitation noting, "an invitation to a president that has aimed to divide this nation is not becoming of this historic moment".

"I think his presence would make a mockery of everything that people tried to do to redeem the soul of America and to make this country better", Lewis said Wednesday.

"The civil rights marchers who are being honored would turn over in their grave knowing that somebody who's stood for that stuff would be in attendance", Thompson told the publication.
