It's not over yet: Norwood demands recount as Bottoms declares victory in mayoral race

Mayor-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms talks with CBS46 News

The margin was razor-thin, with just a few hundred votes separating Keisha Lance Bottoms and Mary Norwood.

Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms emerged victorious on December 5, following a tense mayoral race that ended with a difference of just over 700 votes, according to the latest election results reported by the Associated Press. She is also waiting to see what happens to votes from parts of DeKalb County. Watch that video in the Facebook post below. "I need you all to remember that black girl magic is real", she said to cheers.

Bottoms, a Democrat, squared off against Norwood, an independent, in the nonpartisan runoff to succeed Reed, who is term limited from seeking re-election.

But as Stephannie Stokes reports from member station WABE in Atlanta, the crowd at Norwood's election party was energized too.

Due to Bottoms winning the race by a margin of less than 1 percent, Norwood immediately called for a recount of the vote once the results were announced, noting that absentee ballots from military members still had yet to be included in the final count. The city hasn't had a female mayor since 2010.

Bottoms, meanwhile, sought to cast Norwood as a Republican hiding behind the guise of her independent status.

A win for Bottoms would continue a run for African-American mayors that began with Maynard Jackson in the mid-1970s. But Georgia Democrats, who supported Bottoms, accused Norwood of being a closet conservative.

Bottoms likewise had the backing of major Atlanta hip-hop figures, like Killer Mike and T.I., who compared Norwood to President Donald Trump.

A half-century after white flight led to sprawl that fueled legendary traffic jams, Atlanta is booming economically and growing at a breakneck pace, with townhouses and apartments going up in vacant lots all over town.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting just after midnight, outgoing Mayor Kasim Reed took to the stage at Bottoms' campaign party at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown and introduced her as the next mayor of the city.
