NNPC Boss Cuts Short Foreign Trip To Address Fuel Scarcity

Petrol queues return to Nigerian major cities

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Petroleum Ministry to ensure the current fuel scarcity in some parts of the country do not last beyond weekend.

Speaking with Tribune Online on Tuesday, the South-West zonal chairman of Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria (IPMAN), Ahmed Debo, said the NNPC had been playing double standards by favouring the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMA) regarding supply of premium motor spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol.

NNPC's spokesman also gave the assurance that the ex-depot petrol price of N133.38 per litre and the pump price of N143/N145 per litre have not changed.

He assured the public that the corporation had enough stock of petroleum products to ensure seamless supply and distribution of products across the country, especially during the Yuletide.

Meanwhile, queues are reported in some states across the country.

The statement also quoted Baru to have called on Nigerians to stop panic buying and that the NNPC was doing everything within its reach to address the situation.

About 900 filling stations in Lagos and Ogun would have been affected by the decision and the country may have gone into an urgent fuel scarcity. "We have said times without number that NNPC has sufficient products to cater for the needs of all consumers", Baru stated via a statement on Tuesday.

According to him, "NNPC treats private depot owners (DAPPMA) with priority, by giving them products while they now resell to our members at above the recommended ex-depot price".

NIGERIANS have commenced panic buying as marketers began rationing of petroleum products.

"We enjoin motorists not to engage in panic buying or indulge in the unsafe practice of stocking petroleum products in jerry cans at home".

The queues, which were first noticed in few stations on Saturday, spread to more outlets yesterday, forcing motorists into panic buying.

Baru is expected to appear before the committee on Thursday.

This, he said, is to avoid the situation where some unpatriotic persons would cause unnecessary hardships for Nigerians in the festive season.

"These people are selling to us above the recommended ex-depot price of N133 per litre".

"Also that it has been the NNPC that has been importing but he has assured".
