Low carb diet puts type 2 diabetes into remission

Primary care weight loss schemes 'reversed half of Type 2 diabetes cases'

Professor Taylor, lead researcher of the DiRECT trial, commented on the first year results saying, "These findings are very exciting".

The initial findings come from an ongoing trial study called DiRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial), which aims to find an effective accessible way to put type 2 diabetes into remission long-term.

The trial, done at the Magnetic Resonance Center at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, looked at 306 participants recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the last six years.

Type 2 diabetes is a life-changing condition which progresses over time with potentially devastating consequences.

'But our results should pave the way for this type of intervention to be considered in the routine care of patients with type 2 diabetes who wish to attain diabetes remission'.

The team previously confirmed that Type 2 diabetes is caused by excess fat within the liver and pancreas, and that consuming a very low calorie diet could restore normal glucose.

Remission was closely tied to the degree of weight lost, occurring in around nine out of 10 people who lost 15 kg or more, and almost three-quarters of those who lost 10kg or more.

Whether it be genetics or just every day choices, Boyd said Type 2 diabetes is a problem that won't be going away anytime soon.

Prof Lean said: "Our findings suggest that even if you have had Type 2 diabetes for six years, putting the disease into remission is feasible".

The researchers found that nearly half of the participants (68 total) were able to put their diabetes in remission without the use of medication after one year. He said: 'Many GPs will be able to think of personal examples where a patient with type 2 diabetes gets hold of their lifestyle by the scruff of the neck and manages to reverse their disease, so it is pleasing to see that this may be practical on a larger scale. "Diet and lifestyle are touched upon, but diabetes remission by cutting calories is rarely discussed", Taylor told The Guardian.

The weight loss programme included a low calorie, nutrient-complete diet for 3-5 months, food reintroduction, increase in physical activity and long-term support to maintain weight loss. "In contrast to other approaches, we focus on the need for long-term maintenance of weight loss through diet and exercise and encourage flexibility to optimize individual results".

The trial, conducted in 49 GP practices, confirmed that weight loss was achievable by many patients and could achieve results similar to bariatric surgery, reported researchers in The Lancet.
