Montreal Massacre memorial set for Wednesday in London

The conference began with women placing 14 white roses on a table before a photo of the victims of the Montreal massacre.

They were killed simply because they were women.

"Today marks the 28th anniversary of the day that 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal, exclusively due to their gender".

This year will also mark the 10th year Kamloops has remembered missing and murdered women through the Shoe Memorial. At U of T, events are taking place across all three campuses for the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women.

"I don't think I'm being naïve by saying I think there's potential for significant change here", says Senior, the president and executive director of the Canadian Women's Foundation.

She said the 1989 massacre pulled back the curtain on violence against women.

Mercifully, there were no new local names to add to the list of victims this year, said Andy Lou Somers, with East Prince Women's Information Centre and one of the memorial's organizers.

To support this vision, our Government is working with Canadians to help build an inclusive, respectful society by stepping up and speaking out to stop gender-based violence. A victim, her mother says, of someone with a violent past who targeted women.

On December 6, 1989, one man opened fire and killed 14 young women just because they were women in what has come to be known in Canada as the "Montreal Massacre".

Today is also about asking why acts of violence against women are still happening in 2017.

A co-founder of the Victim Justice Network, de Villiers said that while strides had been made in the effort to combat violence, more work is needed. "Together we have a responsibility to foster a culture of respect and inclusion".

"I'd like to suggest that all of our suffering is connected as is our freedom from it", says Bertsch.

"It is an issue of power and control", she says of gender-based violence, then and now.

"Hearing about the terrible tragedy that happened here was a real eye-opener for me, recognizing that even relatively recently there was a lot of violence towards women who wanted to pursue male-dominated fields", she said after the ceremony.
