MLB trade rumors: Mariners acquire Dee Gordon from Marlins

With an eye on 2018 and the tightly-contested pursuit of Japanese righthander Shohei Ohtani, the Mariners acquired Dee Gordon and $1 million in worldwide bonus pool space from the Marlins Thursday afternoon in exchange for a trio of minor league prospects. The Marlins received minor leaguers Robert Dugger, Nick Neidert and Christopher Torres in the deal. While everybody was focused on where the Marlins would send (or be forced to send, as it were) Giancarlo Stanton, the Mariners helped Miami pull off another major trade. The Mariners - who have Robinson Cano playing second base to the tune of $24 million per year - plan to move Gordon to centerfield, Passan is reporting.

"It's a conversation that's already occurred", Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said of that move. We're very excited about bringing on this kind of athlete. "We feel like that gives him a chance to be a separator in center field". An all-star in 2014 and 2015, Gordon stole 60 bases for the Marlins in 2017. The Mariners have reportedly agreed to assume all of the money remaining on Gordon's contract. In addition, the Mariners will hold a $14 million option for the 2021 season. According to reports, that money amounts to $1 million in pool funds.
