Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez, former San Antonian, announces run for governor

Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez speaks at a law enforcement panel discussion of Senate Bill 4 the so-called Sanctuary Cities Bill in Austin in February

Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez made it official Wednesday morning - she's running for governor of Texas.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who announced his intentions to seek a second term this summer, grew up in Duncanville; his father was a stockbroker and insurance agent, his mother a homemaker, Brian Sweany noted in a 2013 Texas Monthly story.

After attaining the rank of captain in the U.S. Army, Valdez went on to work as a federal agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and, later, the Department of Homeland Security, focusing on fraud and drug cases for nearly 30 years before being elected sheriff of Dallas County, the state's second most populous county.

Valdez announced her intention this morning (Wednesday, Dec. 6) around 6 p.m., and will make the official announcement just before noon at the Dallas County Democratic Party Headquarters. State law prohibits her from holding one office while running for another. And neither she nor her press people were considerate enough to alert the city's only daily newspaper that she was headed to Austin to formally announce her run for governor. "I don't believe that we need 40, 60, 90 bazillion dollars".

Abbott now remains unopposed going into the Republican primary.

Emmert said LiAngelo Ball should not have been at UCLA if he was only there to prepare for a career as a pro basketball player. Ball's sudden departure is just the latest in a string of early-season distractions for the Bruins.

That move prompted Abbott to warn Valdez in a letter that Texas sheriffs who did not cooperate with federal "detainers" would face losing state grant money.

Valdez said she was undaunted by Abbott's campaign fund-raising edge or the fact the state has voted overwhelmingly Republican for years.

Valdez brushed off the endorsement, suggesting to reporters that it does not reflect the view of the full membership of the association. Abbott has no serious GOP challenger.

"For the Dreamers, if this isn't their country, they don't have a country", Valdez said.

Hours later, Abbott's camp released a YouTube video entitled "Can the Texas Democrats Find a Match?" that mocks the party's trouble finding a high-profile candidate to run for governor in what likely is a preview of how he will portray her in the upcoming campaign. The two have already butted heads over the issue of sanctuary cities. "I think we'd be a great match".
