Dems Land Top Recruit: Former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen Will Run For Senate

Phil Bredesen to announce run for US Senate

Phil Bredesen announced Thursday that he will be a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. Bredesen served as mayor of Nashville from 1991 through 1999, and governor of Tennessee from 2002 through 2010. He cruised to re-election in 2006, garnering more votes than any gubernatorial candidate in Tennessee history and sweeping all 95 counties against Republican opponent Jim Bryson. Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke has previously expressed interest in the entering the race but may be reticent to do so with Bredesen's candidacy. But putting Tennessee on the map gives them one narrow path back to the majority - especially if they can pull off an upset in Alabama's special election next week.

Brentwood resident and Congressman Marsha Blackburn may be facing former Gov. Phil Bredesen in a bid for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. In a video announcing his candidacy, Bredesen again sounded centrist themes, touting his experience as governor and his ability to work across party lines.
