Report: Disney Will Acquire Fox Sports Regional Networks in Massive Sports Media Shakeup

It's not the first time reports of a potential deal between Disney and the Rupert Murdoch-controlled company have surfaced, but this time CNBC says a deal could be finalized as soon as next week, with Fox's enterprise valued at $60 billion. Fox will also keep ownership of their local Fox affiliates around the United States. Not including the RSN's could still have a huge impact on Fox Sports and FS1.

"According to Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, "[Rupert] Murdoch has not been high on the RSNs for several years.

Fox also holds the rights to the original Star Wars trilogy and tons of other franchises. Disney has been planning to launch two new over-the-top (OTT) streaming services to take on Netflix, one for Disney/Marvel/Star Wars properties and one for ESPN news and sports.

Bear in mind, Disney is not buying the entire Fox company. For the better part of the last 20 years, ESPN has shown little interest in carving out a local TV business, although the ongoing migration of Major League Baseball and NHL audiences from national to hometown platforms may prove top be another mitigating factor.

The addition of Fox's TV assets and global exposure would be attractive to Disney as it gears itself up to take on players such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Netflix with its forthcoming direct-to-consumer offering.
