Cleveland Browns hire John Dorsey as their new general manager

Browns fire executive VP of football operations Sashi Brown

Hue Jackson remains, though, and the announcement of Sashi Brown's dismissal included the note that he would be coach of the Browns next regardless of who is brought in as the team's new personnel decision-maker.

Less than two years after hiring Sashi Brown, the organization has fired the Executive Vice President.

While Browns are now looking to finish 2017-18 on a high note, yet another No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick is likely on the horizon for the struggling AFC North franchise. And more disturbing for ownership: The on-field results were as bad as ever.

Winless thus far this season, the Browns own a 1-27 mark under the watch of Brown, who was hired to run the front office on January 3, 2016. If he also fails to find a quarterback, he'll meet a similar fate to Brown - and one head coach Hue Jackson could be facing soon.

"We have great appreciation and gratitude for Sashi's commitment and leadership to our organization but believe transitioning to someone with strong experience and success in drafting and building consistently winning football teams is critical to the future of the Cleveland Browns", Jimmy Haslam said in a statement.

But the important thing to remember is that Jackson and Haslam are staying. We have begun the process of having productive conversations regarding leadership of our football operations and will provide further updates when appropriate.

Haslam saying that Jackson will return in 2018 is probably the most surprising development. Among those candidates are former Chiefs GM Jon Dorsey, who was abruptly fired before the season began in Kansas City.

With Brown's departure, the franchise will be searching for a general manager for the ninth time since it returned to Cleveland in 1999.

Brown was named the team's top executive by the Haslams during an overhaul following the 2015 season. He gutted Cleveland's roster, electing not to re-sign some of the team's own free agents in favor of signing younger players and acquiring future draft picks.

The Browns have three second-round picks in 2018 - theirs, and picks from the Eagles and Texans.
