Lilac Fire destroys two structures, prompts evacuations

The wind-whipped blaze erupted Thursday afternoon and authorities say it's moving dangerously fast. & Sullivan Middle School in San Diego County due to the Lilac Fire.

As of late afternoon, crews had gained no containment of the fire, which had grown to about 2,500 acres while being pushed by stiff Santa Ana winds "at a risky rate of spread", Cal Fire reported.

Thousands of homes remain threatened by at least four major Southern California wildfires that have destroyed structures and sent residents fleeing. There have been massive fires in Los Angeles and Ventura counties in the last 48 hours that have burned more than 120,000 acres and are not under control.

The fire threatening the training center started early Thursday afternoon near Interstate 15 where it intersects with California Highway 76.

A victim of the Lilac Fire being transported to an awaiting helicopter. Two firefighters battling the blaze have been hospitalized and were expected to recover.

The Del Mar Racetrack threw open its doors for evacuees, and the owners encouraged people to bring bedding and food for the horses.

Images of mansions and homes in flames shared on social media prompted fears of a similar level of destruction in San Diego County where extreme weather conditions came in the color purple.
