New York City Council members take a knee on the steps of City Hall after Donald Trump condemned the NFL players who choose to kneel

New York City Council members take a knee on the steps of City Hall after Donald Trump condemned the NFL players who choose to kneel.

On Tuesday evening, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick received Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award during SI's Sportsperson of the Year Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Other players supported him, but the movement he started gained new steam - and generated more controversy - after Donald Trump called out players for such actions during a rally in Alabama on September 22.

"Colin took action with no fear of effect or repercussion", Beyonce said. To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color.

Kaepernick accepted the award on behalf of others.

After taking to the stage amid rousing ovation, Kaepernick told the audience: "I accept this award, knowing that the legacy of Muhammad Ali is that of a champion of the people".

Gascon also criticized President Trump and conservative pundits for turning the trial into a "political football". Defense lawyers for Garcia Zarate said Monday they will appeal the state charge for which he was convicted.

"He fully embraced the risk to his career in order to remind Americans of the systemic racism that was denying African-Americans their opportunities to equal education, jobs, health and even their lives", Abdul-Jabbar said. Everybody knew the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback would get that valuable award, which is given to an athlete who uses their platform to promote change, for all of Colin's activism within the National Football League world to demand racial equality and more social justice in America. Beyoncé said that Kaepernick's message was not to protest those who serve selflessly to defend the nation, but to draw attention to the work that still needs to be done in terms of race relations. "We're still waiting for the world to catch up up".

Kaepernick's actions have been criticized by those who view his decision to protest during the anthem as a sign of disrespect toward the military or the nation as a whole. "Let's not get that mistaken", Beyoncé said of Kaepernick.

"I am using my platform to protest systematic oppression, racial injustice, and the dire consequences of anti-blackness in America".

Kaepernick was also recently honored by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California with the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award as well as being named GQ magazine's "Citizen of the Year".
