It's not the first time astronauts have shown us how they live in space.

The latest habitat to come under scrutiny, as described in a paper in the journal PeerJ, is the ISS.

The ISS has allowed for over 200 different foods to now be consumed in space, cheese doesn't make the cut but it does allow for the astronauts to eat some good ol' home cooking.

"'Is it gross" and "Will you see microbes from space' are probably the two most common questions we get about this work", said co-author David Coil, a microbiologist at the University of California, Davis.

They found that the types of bacteria are similar to what you would find in a typical home. For that study, people around the U.S. were asked to send in samples of the bacteria found in their homes, and they were then sent up to the International Space Station - the new research reverses that, bringing samples back down from space and exploring them. "So it is probably no more or less gross than your living room".

Quoting from the study, The Washington Post reported that the interior surfaces of the 17-year-old, 250-mile-high, airtight space station harbor at least 1,000 and perhaps more than 4,000 microbe species. The ISS, where the only microbiological travellers are brought aboard by its inhabitants and its cargo, offers a uniquely sterile testing ground that no terrestrial building could hope to match.
