"The current purging and cleansing process in Zanu PF which so far is targeting mostly members associated with our liberation history is a serious cause for concern to us in the Defence Forces", he said.

In a chilling warning to Mugabe and his lieutenants in the ruling Zanu PF party, Chiwenga warned the military could be forced to step-in and restore order.

The incident angered Mugabe who spoke at the same rally shortly after his wife, accusing his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa of organising and sponsoring the hecklers.

Mugabe's 37 years in power has been anchored by support from the military, which has always said it will not back anyone for president who did not fight in the liberation war.

He said the ZANU-PF had been undermined by "gossiping, backbiting and public chastisement" since 2015, and added, "Indeed, the party is undoing its legacy built over the years".

But the 75-year-old former vice president has powerful military connections, having served as defence and state security minister.

Presidential Message on Antibiotic Awareness Week, 2017
Antibiotic resistance "It is important that the public is aware that globally we are running out of effective antibiotics". New Zealand is joining the global battle to raise awareness around appropriate use of antibiotics.

In 2008, after the first round of elections in which the Movement for Democratic Change, an opposition party led by Morgan Tsvangirai, won at the polls, the military warned that it would not allow leaders without liberation-war credentials to take power, and 200 people died in a state-sponsored crackdown on the opposition. Meanwhile, critics maintained that the former vice president had become a "stumbling block to First Lady's ambitions to succeed her husband".

The party appears split over the succession with the G40 faction supporting Grace and another faction, that includes war veterans, rooting for the ousted Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa's ouster marked a dramatic shift in politics in Zimbabwe, where he had been a pillar of a military and security apparatus that helped Mugabe, 93, emerge as the nation's leader after independence from the U.K.in 1980.

The crisis, he concluded, meant Zimbabwe was struggling with "cash shortages and rising commodity prices".

The general's statement stopped short of directly criticizing Mr. Mugabe, arguing that one of his slogans - "Zimbabwe will never be a colony again" - was being "seriously challenged by counterrevolutionary infiltrators".

"What we are witnessing is the military saying: "We are willing to intervene if the red line is crossed".
