Fortnight-long firearms amnesty begins on November 13

Surrender firearms during national campaign

The last time such an amnesty was launched in 2014 more than 6,000 guns were handed in, including antique guns, imitation firearms, handguns, rifles, shotguns and ammunition. However others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to threaten or harm their local communities.

During the surrender, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for the illegal possession upon surrender, and can remain anonymous. That's why we're offering people this opportunity to safely hand in their unwanted weapons which, if in the wrong hands, could be deadly.

"The fight against gun crime is stronger than ever".

He said intelligence-led operations have smashed a number of gun-running rings, such as the one in Kent which brought in 31 Skorpion sub-machine guns, the same weapon used during the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

From today, Monday November 13, until Sunday, November 26, Gwent Police is joining with forces across the United Kingdom in asking members of the public to surrender unlawfully held or unwanted guns and ammunition to prevent them from getting into criminal hands. So, removing weapons, even if they're not used, off the street, out of the lofts, into a safe place into a safe place is in everybody's interest.

"Too many lives have been torn apart by gun crime and it is no exaggeration to say every weapon retrieved via the surrender has the potential to save a life".

The two-week surrender gives members of the public the chance to dispose of a firearm or ammunition by taking it to a local designated police station and handing it in. Furthermore there may be people who, because of the change in legislation around possessing a firearm, now own a weapon they can not legally hold.

A guns and firearms surrender, which we've already told you is starting in Wiltshire, is also opening in Hampshire from today (Monday 13th November 2017). This is an opportunity to dispose of them safely.

Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe said: "Gun crime is still thankfully rare in Warwickshire, but protecting people from harm is key commitment in my Police and Crime Plan, so this gun surrender campaign is welcome news".

"There are a number of reasons that people may find themselves with a firearm they should not have, whether through inheritance or legally-owned guns they have no more use for".

Latest crime figures released in October by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that crime involving firearms in England & Wales has increased by 27% (to 6,696). "This way you can be confident you have got rid of a firearm safely".

Additionally, while the Firearms Act 1968 allows antique firearms to be possessed without a certificate as a "curiosity or ornament", the changes to the law in 2014 now means that if you are prohibited from possessing firearms, you will be unable to possess antique weapons.

If you know of people involved in illegal firearms activity contact the police as above or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. "Ensuring that items which may be illegal, unsafe or insecure are handed to police will help to keep Dorset a safe place to live and visit".
