In another unusual and candid moment from the ASEAN summit, Duterte - who recently said he stabbed someone to death when he was a teenage because of "a look" - sang a Filipino love song "on the orders of Donald Trump" shortly before the summit.

Trump's comments came shortly before he took off for the Philippines, the final stop of his five-country Asia trip. The two men also shared a laugh in the meeting when Duterte called reporters "spies", the Associated Press reports. The Indian Prime Minister arrived in the Philippines capital on Sunday for a three-day visit.

Duterte cursed Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, previous year for raising concerns about the war on drugs and he subsequently declared that he was breaking with the United States, a close ally of the Philippines since World War Two.

A communications official with the Duterte administration said the Philippines president and Trump "really hit it off".

However, in keeping with ASEAN's principle of non-interference in each others' internal affairs, it appeared to have been put aside at the summit, which brought Southeast Asian nations together with the United States, Japan, China, India, Australia and Canada.
