Ultimately the awards went to two men who managed big turnarounds in their clubhouses: In the National League, it was Torey Lovullo, the first-year skipper who turned the Arizona Diamondbacks from a 93-loss team cellar dweller to a 93-win postseason team in just one season. Lovullo accumulated 111 points (18 first place votes) followed by Roberts with 55 (five first place votes) and Black 43 points (three first place votes). He joins Kirk Gibson in 2011 and Bob Melvin in 2007. It's a deserving award for Lovullo, who led the Diamondbacks to the NLDS during his first year as manager.

Lovullo, who became the third Arizona manager to win the Manager of Year Award, collected 18 first-place votes, beating out Dodgers manager Dave Roberts by 56 points and the Rockies' Bud Black by 68.

Lovullo, who is the seventh manager to win the award in his first season as a manager, guided the Diamondbacks to a 93-69 season-a 24-win improvement from 2016. Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers finished fourth and Dusty Baker, who was sacked by the Washington Nationals, finished fifth. Voting was completed before the playoffs began.
