Things to Know About the New Quantum Browser

Firefox Quantum arrives with faster browser engine, major visual overhaul, and Google as default search engine

Firefox Quantum 57 Is Here To Kill Google Chrome: Download For Windows, Mac, Linux

This is in the form of Project Quantum, Mozilla has changed the soul of their open-source web browser. When people use Firefox, Google's search box will be on the launch page, prompting users to type in valuable queries that Google can sell ads against.

Until 2011, Firefox held second-place in the global internet browser market share behind Internet Explorer. Firefox 57 combines the address and search bars - for new installations at least; existing users who miss the latter can restore it - reduces the clutter at the top of the window, and debuts a reworked new tab page.

Firefox Quantum is now available on Windows, Mac and Linux, with iOS and Android versions set to arrive in the future. Developers have been tinkering with the test version over the past several weeks to let Mozilla know if there are any bugs or security holes prior to Tuesday's public release. Previously, Google was the default on Firefox browsers.

Mozilla today delivered a re-engineered Firefox, branded "Quantum", that it claims is twice as fast as just a few months earlier, and unveiled a re-drawn UI (user interface) with minimalist leanings. Bryant is a fellow in Mozilla's Emerging Technologies organization.

Mozilla says they have doubled Firefox's speed since previous year.

What Is Kratom? Opioid Alternative Poses 'Deadly Risks,' FDA Warns
The FDA's chief, Scott Gottleib, asked Congress for more power and expanded resources to combat the opioid epidemic on Tuesday. The agency states, however, that there is no reliable evidence that kratom can be used to treat opioid use disorder.

Firefox says this new version is 2x faster than before, while uses 30% less memory than Chrome and comes with "truly private browsing with tracking protection".

In a blog post, Mozilla said Firefox's default search engine will be Google in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Quantum CSS leverages the multi-core processors in our modern computing rigs, parallelizing work across all cores. This lower memory footprint is most noticeable when opening multiple tabs (which all of us frequently do), as users won't see a drag on performance or crippling memory and CPU usage that can often cripple Chrome.

Here's a video that shows some of the changes. Everything from the UI (now codenamed Photon) to the underlying browser engine (Servo) has been built new, from the ground up. Indeed, three of the four past releases (Firefox 53, Firefox 54, and Firefox 55) included Quantum improvements.

It also features content recommendations from the reading-list app Pocket. Since 2014, Yahoo has been the default browser on Firefox.
