President Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan to Make 2-Day Official Visit to Uganda

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni signs joint communique the during the 8th summit of East African Community heads of State in Arusha

Bashir is wanted by the Hague-based worldwide Criminal Court (ICC) on two counts of crimes against humanity and genocide.

Bashir, who last visited Uganda in May this year for Museveni's swearing-in ceremony, is in the country for bi-lateral talks. Sudan's president is here for a two-day visit.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for al-Bashir in 2009 and 2010 on charges of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity in the Sudanese region of Darfur. "A joint ministerial team will follow up to actualise this", said Museveni. "We therefore call upon the government of Uganda to fulfill its obligations under worldwide and domestic laws by arresting and surrendering President Omar al-Bashir".

Upon learning of Bashir's visit to Uganda, several human rights groups called for the arrest of the Sudanese leader, in power since 1989.

Other African nations, including South Africa, have ignored the ICC's demands to detain al-Bashir.

According to Uganda government-run sector regulator, Sudan is the second biggest importer of Ugandan coffee after the European Union.

During the upcoming Official Visit by President Omar Al-Bashir, a number of areas of cooperation will be discussed including trade and investment, agriculture, regional peace and security as well as worldwide matters of mutual interest.

Uganda and Sudan continue to strengthen their bilateral relations. A delegation from the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization visited Uganda from November 5-8, 2017 to inspect the coffee testing/quality assurance facilities of Uganda Coffee Development Authority, Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and private coffee processors.

Uganda accused Sudan of offering succour to the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) warlord Joseph Kony while Sudan said Uganda was lending support to SPLA, the rebel group that was fighting for an Independent South Sudan.
