Sessions Throws Cold Water On GOP Fever To Appoint New Special Counsel

Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have just thrown a wrench into GOP plans to open a new federal investigation of Hillary Clinton.

Jordan grilled Sessions on various claims that the Obama-era Federal Bureau of Investigation colluded with Democrats to elevate the dossier put together by ex-British spy Christopher Steele that made various Russian-related allegations about President Trump.

The department also confirmed that it was considering a special counsel to investigate the foundation of former president Bill Clinton, and its ties to companies involved in a deal that sold U.S. uranium rights to a Russian state company.

This morning at a House Judiciary Committee hearing, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) pressed Sessions for a special counsel investigation into how former FBI Director James Comey handled the Clinton probe during the election. "The proliferation of special counsels in a political setting is very, very bad".

"Each of those are pretty special factual situations, and we will use the proper standards, and that's the only thing I can tell you, Mr. Jordan" Sessions said.

A day earlier, the Washington Post reported Sessions ordered top prosecutors in the department to look into these areas and report back to him, possibly to make the case for a special prosecutor.

Lawmakers say some in Congress are harassers, new policies may be needed
During a House Administration hearing Tuesday on sexual harassment prevention, Rep. He said that would be more effective than the "current patchwork" of policies.

Sessions insisted in his testimony that he is not leaning one way or the other on the appointment of a new special counsel and that he is awaiting a detailed presentation from senior officials at the Justice Department.

It would take a factual basis that meets the standards of the appointment of a special counsel.

US Congressman Adam Schiff tweeted, "If the AG bends to pressure from President Trump and his allies, and appoints a special counsel to investigate Trump's vanquished rival, it could spell the end of the DOJ as an independent institution". You can have your idea, but sometimes we have to study what the facts are and to evaluate whether it meets the standard that requires a special counsel.

"Everybody is asking why the Justice Department (and FBI) isn't looking into all of the dishonesty going on with Crooked Hillary & the Dems".

Conyers repeated the question, and Sessions replied, "I would say that the Department of Justice can never be used to retaliate politically against opponents".

The committee members say they're also concerned about what they call "potentially unlawful global dealings" and alleged connections between foreign entities and the Clinton campaign or foundation.
