Mumbai: Thieves dig 25-foot tunnel into bank

Thieves dig 25-foot tunnel to rob bank

It is not a scene from a movie or some television series but a real-life incidence where some thieves dug a tunnel under a Navi Mumbai bank, broke into 30 lockers and stole valuables worth Rupees 5-6 crore, police said.

The robbery took place at a branch of Bank of Baroda in the Juninagar area near Navi Mumbai at some time between Saturday and Sunday, sources said.

Much-like a heist in a thriller flick, the theft came to light when those employed at the Sanpada branch arrived for work on Monday and much to their shock the vaults were found open.

Android Oreo will soon save some storage space due to inactive apps

The robbers made their move over the weekend when the bank was shut and managed to steal valuables from 30 of the 225 lockers.

The robbers had rented out an adjoining shop outside the bank's store room in May 2017.

Here's why. All bank agreements with customers availing locker facilities holds the relationship between them as that of a lessor and a lessee, or a landlord and a tenant, an RTI response revealed in a PTI report in June this year had revealed. Then they went on to dig another part. "However, there were none inside the locker room to respect the privacy of customers", said Kiran Patil, assistant commissioner of police (Nerul) division. After that a horizontal tunnel of around 30 feet with a height of around four and half feet was dug till the bank locker room which was linked to another tunnel going up. "Even though the exact valuation of the looted items is yet to be ascertained, it appears that valuables worth Rs 40 lakh have been stolen", an official said. The bank had called all its customers and was verifying other records. "I came to keep a mangalsutra in the bank, and found that my locker was broken into".
