Rival same-sex marriage bill to trigger Coalition showdown

WA Liberal Senator Dean Smith to introduce same-sex marriage bill this week

If the "yes" vote prevails in the postal survey - to be announced Wednesday - the government has indicated it will facilitate debate on Liberal senator Dean Smith's private member's bill.

On the eve of the same-sex marriage survey result, Mr Turnbull said MPs and Senators would be free to move amendments to any bill to change the Marriage Act, but those contained in Senator Paterson's plan but would have "virtually no prospect of getting through the Parliament".

The suggested laws have been received by supporters of the "yes" vote as a "kick in the teeth" to the gay community and which would roll back the clock on anti-discrimination legislation.

Ms McLeod said the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017, endorsed by five government members including Senator Dean Smith, already extended existing protections for freedom of religious expression in the context of marriage and was a reasonable compromise.

In response to concerns over the controversial Safe Schools program, the bill would also allow parents to pull their children out of classes where they "genuinely believe" their kids are being taught a view of marriage inconsistent with their own.

The Paterson bill is expected to enjoy substantial support from that quarter as it implements demands from Tony Abbott, Matt Canavan, Michael Sukkar, Zed Seselja, Andrew Hastie, Eric Abetz and Kevin Andrews.

TWO months ago, millions of survey forms were mailed to eligible Australian voters asking if they believed same-sex marriage should be legalised.

UAE's energy minister said he saw no need for the decision to be delayed beyond the November 30 meeting in Vienna. The group is anticipated to extend the cuts beyond the current deadline, which will be in March next year.

Liberal senator James Paterson has proposed an alternative same-sex marriage bill.

Nevertheless, discussions are well under underway as to how same-sex marriage might be legislated. However, if the Labor Party wins the next federal election, we could see marriage equality be reintroduced in parliament.

"It was part of the journey in Ireland [during the referendum on marriage equality], the issue of freedom to discriminate against people, but that debate lasted a couple of hours because Irish people remember what those signs look like".

The move has inflamed tensions between the conservatives and moderates in the party and set the stage for a lengthy parliamentary debate over religious freedoms and anti-discrimination laws.

"If the parliament opts for a narrower bill with fewer protections, I fear we will see some Australians seek to impose their values on others, with court cases and other legal mechanisms", he said in a statement announcing the draft bill.

"It would be self-defeating to repeal discrimination and replace it with discrimination", he said.

"I suspect 30-40% of Australian will vote no".
