The top Iranian diplomat said, "Blocking of humanitarian access to an already famine-stricken Yemen and the decision to "close all Yemeni air, sea and land ports" have further deteriorated the humanitarian nightmare in Yemen".

"There is no embargo", Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi said.

Jamie McGoldrick, the head of the UN's aid mission in Yemen, criticised the Saudis, saying such measures would take too long to implement and cause needless deaths.

The announcement from the Saudi mission at the United Nations came after the coalition fighting Yemen's rebels, known as Houthis, faced widespread global criticism over the closure, with the U.N. and over 20 aid groups saying it could bring millions of already suffering people closer to "starvation and death". "There are many sources of supply to Yemen, even during the past week or so". The Saudi closure had drawn global condemnation and fears of a worsening humanitarian disaster in Yemen. Saudi Arabia is backing supporters of ousted President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi against rebels called the Houthis, who are backed by Iran and allied with militants supporting former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

He also said that the more the blockade tightens, the more the Houthis will develop their abilities to "respond to the assault of the enemy".

An air raid by the Saudi-led military coalition put Yemeni airport in the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa out of service on Tuesday, jeopardizing relief shipments to a country on the brink of starvation, the state news agency SABA reported. The announcement has come after the coalition and their allies have faced severe criticism internationally over the closure.

"The first step in this process will be taken within the next 24 hours and will include and involve the reopening of all ports and airports in areas controlled by the government of Yemen".
