Jeff Sessions considers special counsel for investigation into Hillary Clinton

14 November 2017, 06:26 | Taylor George

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy says Attorney General Jeff Sessions is giving incorrect or incomplete answers about his relationship to Russian contacts.

According to a report from Fox News, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is looking into possibly opening an investigation into Hillary Clinton's involvement with sales of a uranium mining company to Russian Federation.

Last month, Republican leaders of two House committees launched an investigation into an Obama-era deal in which a Russian company bought a Canadian firm that owned some 20 percent of US uranium supplies.

Those prosecutors would then make recommendations "as to whether any matters not now under investigation should be opened, whether any matters now under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a Special Counsel", the letter said.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now probing Russian meddling in the 2016 election, which, at least publicly, has focused on hacks into Democratic National Committee emails and meetings between Trump campaign officials and Russians.

The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly open to appointing a special counsel to investigate the Uranium One deal and alleged wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation, a potential bombshell development in the unfolding scandal.

"Everybody is asking why the Justice Department (and FBI) isn't looking into all of the dishonesty going on with Crooked Hillary & the Dems", Trump said in a series of tweets on November 3. It was after Sessions's recusal that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to lead the investigation into the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

Trump has been pushing hard to divert attention from his own investigation that looks increasingly ominous for the president and those around him. That issue has been at the forefront of each of his congressional hearings even as Sessions has labored to promote the Justice Department's work and priorities, and Tuesday's appearance is unlikely to be an exception.

In 2010 a company called Uranium One was partially sold to Russia's nuclear authority Rosatom.

"If, as recent reports suggest, you rejected Mr. Papadopoulos's suggestion that President Trump meet with Vladimir Putin at that March 31 meeting - a fact you appear to have remembered only after Mr. Papadopoulos's account was made public - it seems likely that you were "aware" of communications between the Russian government and surrogates of the Trump campaign", the letter states. He noted the Justice Department Inspector General already was investigating several aspects of the Clinton email case and said once that probe was complete the department would assess "what, if any, additional steps are necessary to address any issues identified by that review".
