Aussie Parliament loses 8th legislator in citizenship crisis

Jacqui Lambie to resign after learning she's a British citizen

The Jacqui Lambie Network's Queensland candidate was forced withdraw because of the same issue now threatening to bring down the Senator.

Unlike other dual citizens who have failed their constitutional requirements under Section 44 of the Constitution, Senator Lambie may not be replaced by those beneath her on her 2016 election ticket.

Crossbench senator Jacqui Lambie has announced she will be resigning from Parliament after confirming she holds British citizenship, becoming the latest casualty in the months-long citizenship crisis.

But today it's been reported she has sought urgent advice from British authorities and, according to Fairfax, could hand in her resignation within 24 hours.

But Lambie had dismissed concerns over her eligibility last week, telling Tasmania's Examiner newspaper that she had "no concerns" over her eligibility to sit in Parliament.

Senator Lambie's announcement came as the Turnbull Government ramped up pressure on Labor leader Bill Shorten over the citizenship credentials of opposition MPs.

Ms Lambie says she's proud of her Scottish heritage and had learned more about her father's family history in recent weeks while researching her autobiography, that was due for release next year.

Lambie joins an illustrious gang of parliament rejects after Former Senate President Stephen Parry, One Nation's Malcolm Roberts, Greens Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters, and Nick Xenophon fell on their swords over Section 44.

The outspoken parliamentarian at the time insisted her affairs were in order, and that she was "satisfied" there was no concern over her citizenship status. Her seat is likely to go to Devonport Mayor Steve Martin (probably not the actor?).

The government and main opposition party cobbled together a deal on Monday to agree to a deadline of December 1 for all politicians to disclose the birthplace of their parents and grandparents.

The Turnbull Government is now facing two by-elections in the Lower House: one for Mr Joyce in New England, and another for John Alexander in Bennelong, who has also quit over a latent dual citizenship.
