The platform is created to simplify development and enable support for multiple, cross-platform VR devices.

One of the only questions I've asked HTC VR execs consistently over the past several months is whether the Daydream version of its upcoming standalone headset would ship on time in late 2017, they have consistently said it will, though now it seems as though the entire project has been cancelled.

The new wireless VR headset features an AMOLED display and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. This allows for detecting three-dimensional movement and three-dimensional rotation in any environment, with no need for additional external sensors. It doesn't appear HTC has mentioned any pricing at this time, though the company does say that more than 100 developers are now working on content for Focus. The company hopes that Vive Wave will "bring together the highly fragmented mobile VR market" by make device optimisation and content creation easier for third-party developers. Focus uses an open platform called Wave VR and can access the Viveport VR content.

While a lot of the presentation did reference China-specific goals, the likelihood of these developments eventually reaching the global audience is good. With the Vive Wave SDK, vendors can integrate accessories - be it a Leap Motion, gloves or even outside-in solutions for 6DoF input (and potentially eye-tracking solutions to ease up rendering resources). Developers who are already using Unity will enjoy the added benefit of the new one-click process to publish to Viveport, along with in-app payment support starting with China. "The combination of Snapdragon's ultra-low power, high performance VR coupled with the new Vive Wave VR open platform will help content developers deliver best-in-class mobile VR experiences to users". While Oculus executives have outright noted that they are not particularly interested in making money off of hardware sales, there aren't many other options for HTC which has done a poor job of becoming a platform company in the U.S. despite being first-to-market.
