Abe hails "fresh start" to Japan-China ties after Xi meeting

Japan's PM Abe arrives in PH for ASEAN-related summits

US President Donald Trump raised North Korea's missile tests during talks on Monday (Nov 13) with the prime ministers of Japan and Australia, and said "a lot" of progress had been made in negotiations on trade.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed a "fresh start" to the relationship between the countries after a meeting that saw them agree to work more closely on North Korea.

At the outset of the meeting on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, Abe called the North Korea issue "the immediate challenge facing our three countries, which share fundamental values and strategic interests".

At the meeting, Duterte, who chairs this year's ASEAN meetings, assured Abe of his support in Tokyo's campaign against North Korea.

While differences remain in the two countries' positions on North Korea and territorial disputes in the South China Sea, Abe and Li found some common ground on both issues.

"We condemn his several launching of missiles. It is bad. It puts a strain on everybody, not only on Japan but all over the world", the President said. "And he should realize that he'd be responsible for ending life in this planet if his mind goes out of control", Duterte said.

According to Duterte, the ASEAN is trying to persuade Kim to stop his aggressiveness as this may bring the world to the point of no return. "That's why we are persuading him, maybe pleading with him to stop the -", Duterte was heard saying, before media were led out of the room. "The Philippines is too far but, you know, nobody will save us from a holocaust if it happens", he said.
