Panama Papers scandal Witnesses record statement against Nawaz Sharif

Judge Mohammad Bashir is hearing the cases after former premier Nawaz Sharif daughter, Maryam Nawaz and his son-in-law, Captain (retd) Safdar reached the court amid tight security.

Nawaz Sharif stated that he has to look after his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz in London; therefore, he should be granted the leniency for one week.

Judge of the Accountability Court Islamabad Muhammad Bashir accepted both the applications, allowing Nawaz Sharif and Maryam to fly to London.

As the trial began, the NAB prosecution presented its first two witnesses in court ─ Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Joint Registrar Sidra Mansoor and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Inland Revenue Department representative, Jahangir Ahmad ─ both of whom recorded their statements.

She further claimed that she had provided the bureau with the 2000-2005 audit report of Hudabiya Paper Mills.

The counsels of Nawaz and his children, Khawaja Harris and Amjad Pervez, raised objection that the witness submitted unverified documents as they did not have company's stamp.

The case was adjourned till November 22.

The court has summoned four another witnesses to record their statement.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday submitted a compliance report before the Accountability Court on declaring Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz as proclaimed offenders.

The former premier and his sons, Hassan and Hussain, have been named in all three NAB references, while Maryam and husband Safdar have been named only in the Avenfield reference.

Mansoor recorded her statement in the Avenfield flats reference, telling the court that she had appeared before the Investigation Officer in Lahore on August 18, and provided NAB documents containing the Sharif family's financial records. The court had also rejected the petition.

She said no allegation of corruption has been proven against Nawaz Sharif.

In an informal chat with media persons outside the court, the former Prime Minister said there should be no double standards in dispensation of justice.

On November 8, the court had formally indicted Sharif in three references as he was earlier indicted on October 19 and 20 in presence of his legal representative Zaafir Khan.

The anti-graft body was given six weeks, from the date of the apex court's order, to file the reference in an accountability court while the accountability court was granted six months to wrap up the proceedings.

Its Lahore branch prepared a reference on the Sharif family's Avenfield apartments in London and another against Finance Minister Ishaq Dar for owning assets beyond his known sources of income.
