British doctor saves himslef by punching shark during surfing attack in Australia

The 25-year-old, named in local media as Charlie Fry, was surfing with three others at Avoca Beach in New South Wales state north of Sydney on Monday when the shark "jumped out of the water and hit him in the right shoulder", police said.

"So Mick, if you're watching or listening, I owe you a beer".

Mr Fry has only been in Australia for a few months.

"So I just punched it in the face with my left hand and then managed to scramble back on my board, shout at me friends and luckily a wave came, so I just sort of surfed the wave in", he added. "I'll get to tell the story for the rest of my life".

"Me and my friends have just started surfing, and we saw the YouTube clip of Mick Fanning saying he punched [a shark] in the nose", Fry said. "I'm literally about to die, '" Fry said.

He said he heard a "massive thud" and initially thought it was a friend playing around but turned and "saw a shark's head come out of the water with its teeth".

A search helicopter spotted a three-metre shark in the area shortly after the attack.
