"We're excited about the significant business we have in China and its growth potential".

Reuters today reported that Amazon is going to sell its AWS cloud services unit in China to its partner Sinnet Technology in a $300 million deal. Moreover, the deal would help to "comply with China's laws to further improve the company's AWS cloud services" based on quality and security. In China, regulations require Amazon to operate via a local partner before offering the services to customers. If the company intends to continue functioning in China, it has to cooperate with local partners, that often have some degree of government oversight, an AWS spokesman explained.

Amazon will still possess the intellectual property for its AWS services.

Legal reasons appear to be the reason that Amazon is offloading the business. In August, Sinnet told customers it would shut down VPNs and other services on its networks that allow users to circumvent China's so-called Great Firewall system of censorship, citing direct instructions from the government.
