Canada is quickly gaining a reputation as a global leader when it comes to addressing workplace mental health.

Most mental health conditions don't necessarily have obvious symptoms and many people instinctively cover up any signs that they're struggling, which makes it a lot harder to explain the need for a day off.

North East England businesses employing 400,000 people are being urged to take part in the campaign to raise awareness of workplace mental health issues.

"So we are delighted to be offering people the chance to get funding to put on their own activity or event".

In support of World Mental Health Day, the Group is supporting communities through its charity partner, Mental Health UK, having raised £3million to date.

In August, YouGov was commissioned by Unum to carry out an online survey of 1,000 people with experience of mental health problems in work, and 1,000 people with line management responsibilities.

Added to the above, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) recently released statistics which suggest that up to a quarter of the South African workforce suffers from mental health illnesses at some point in their career. "For me it was firstly about identifying that I was suffering from a mental health issue and then dealing with it head on, by getting the right level of support around me".

This, he said, was important because the absence of the recognition of mental health problems at the workplace could lead to poor employee performances and output, which would in turn affect the profit margin of the organization and also national development.

The pledge is backed by corporates like Red Bull as well as startups and states: "We pledge to create an open environment where mental health is supported, and people can bring their full selves to work".
