Tesla has announced a recall of some Model X vehicles to fix a potential safety issue with rear seats which might shift in a crash

Electric carmaker Tesla Inc is recalling 11,000 Model X sport utility vehicles worldwide due to a faulty locking mechanism in their rear seats that raises the risk of the seats falling forward in a crash. Tesla said it believes only 3 per cent of the recalled vehicles are affected by the issue, and a company spokesperson said it hasn't received any reports of accidents or injuries.

The Model X has suffered quality issues in the past, but the voluntary recall reiterates a notable habit of Tesla to act quickly on even minor issues, even after just a single incident. In April 2016, the company withdrew 2700 cars, since the third-row seat could move during accidents.

The issue was traced to a latch that could cause the seat on the left side of the second row to fall forward in the event of an crash.

Internal testing revealed that cables in second-row fold-flat seats in 2016 and 2017 model year vehicles might need to be adjusted to "ensure the safety" of those riding inside, a Tesla spokesperson said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

It is the second time the model has been recalled because of problems with the seats.

Tesla began informing customers about the recall Thursday.

The Elon Musk-founded automaker says that the Model X problem is the result of cables within the seat that have not been properly tightened. Tesla Model X owners can take their vehicle to a dealer for repairs or reach out to Tesla's mobile fix units. There haven't been any reports of seat issues in the field.
