The company made the official announcement to thousands of employees first during a gathering in Los Angeles. Once approved, he said, Southwest will fly most of its routes from California to Kauai, Honolulu and the island of Hawaii. "We're ready and excited to address a request we've heard for years", Kelly said.

The flights will utilize Southwest's newly acquired Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which the airline explains is the next generation of the 737 models.

Southwest Airlines, the US carrier known for its lack of seating assignments, short routes and no-frills service late Wednesday announced it plans to start selling tickets for service to Hawaii next year, answering a question that investors and its loyal customers have asked the carrier. And with a major carrier adding flights to Hawaii in 2018, this may be a good time to start.

In a Wednesday statement about the new service Southwest said it was announcing its "intention to launch an application process for Federal Aviation Administration authorization". It's not yet known which airports will offer direct nonstop service to Hawaii.

Currently, seven airlines operate in the market, but this will reduce to five before Southwest begins service.

But Watterson refuted the notion that Southwest won't be able to offer lower fares.

Southwest Chief Revenue Officer Andrew Watterson says the airline can't give a date for when flights will begin as it depends on when it receives the FAA certification.

"We see prices higher than they need to be and we anticipate lowering fares", Watterson said in an interview.

The Company's aircraft and available seat miles plans for 2018 are unchanged with today's announcement. Southwest received nine MAX 8s on October 1 and will have 14 by the end of this year.
