Penn State 'preparing' for Texas A&M to pursue James Franklin

In his fourth season with the Nittany Lions, Franklin has his team at 6-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Per CBS Sports, Penn State is preparing for Texas A&M to make a run at James Franklin this offseason if the Aggies fire current coach Kevin Sumlin.

A&M has devoted huge resources to football since it moved to the SEC, but Franklin, a Pennsylvania native, has Penn State rolling at a high level on the field and in recruiting.

It sounds like Franklin is happy with the Nittany Lions, and why wouldn't he be?

Of course, that means reported interest in Penn State head coach James Franklin is bound to surface. Franklin's young (45 years old), recruiting-savvy (No. 3-ranked 2018 class) and experienced in the SEC (24 wins in three years at Vanderbilt).

This past summer Franklin signed a three-year contract extension worth almost $20 million that would keep him in Happy Valley through 2022. He's an attractive candidate for the Aggies, who'd have to pay Penn State a modest $2 million buyout.

It was a sign of good faith from both sides after the progress Franklin and the program have made over the past year. There's no guarantee that he gets fired-he's 48-23 in five-plus seasons in College Station-but still, A&M has finished 8-5 for three straight seasons, so if Sumlin can't get past eight wins, he could well get the axe.
