No bullock cart races in Maharashtra this Diwali Bombay HC extends ban

In the recent development, the Supreme Court has refused to relax on the ban of the sale of firecrackers in Delhi NCR.

The apex court had recently banned the sale of crackers in Delhi-NCR till November 1, dealing a body blow to the traders and businessmen dealing in them.

Lawyers for the petitioner told the apex court that after the lifting of the November 2016 ban on September 12 this year, they had bought firecrackers for sale but the October 9 ban had caused them harm.

"We are pained at communal remarks on the verdict".

The top court had recently imposed the ban on fireworks until November 1, saying it wanted to test if it would make a difference to Delhi's air quality, ranked among the worst in the world. "Anyhow, it is not going to be a cracker-free Diwali", the court said.

The apex court's decision was, however, not welcomed by the firecracker traders. The Supreme Court bench proceeded by the Justice AK Sikri, while re-establishing the command said, "We must see at least in one Deepavali the effect of a cracker-free celebration". "Sale of firecrackers which has already taken place before the ban order".

Last year, the top court suspended all licences which "permit the sale of fireworks, wholesale and retail within the territory of NCR".

The court said, "Have not stopped people from celebrating Diwali, only restricted bursting of crackers". "They can burn them from 6 pm to 10 pm on October 19", he said.

They said their licences were revived in pursuance of the apex court's September order and that they had procured firecrackers for the sale during Diwali.

The court said this as one of the petitioners said Diwali was not only celebrated by the Hindus but also by Jains and Sikhs.
