Several foreign media outlets claimed Weah, the former World Footballer of the Year, has already run the election.

The final results are due to be declared today by Liberia's National Elections Commission (NEC).

Liberia's health system was decimated by Ebola, a challenge for Nobel Prize-winning President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who also led Liberia's transition from a 14-year civil war. The victory is believed to have boosted his political image across the West African country ahead of the 2017 presidential poll which held on Tuesday, October 10.

Presenting their preliminary finding on the election process, the head of the ECOWAS observer mission and former Ghanaian president, John Mahama lauded the efforts of the Liberian security services in quelling the pockets of violence which arose during voting on Tuesday. If there is a runoff election it will come two weeks after that announcement.

"If NEC does not cooperate with our request, we will take the appropriate legal action", the party's chairman, Benjamin Sanvee, said in the capital city of Monrovia. It is yet to be seen what significant effect such incidents had on the general conduct of the election.
