Avocados and Bananas Can Help Prevent Heart Disease

Attention people! Eating a banana daily can prevent the risk of heart attacks and stroke, new research suggests.

Study author Dr Paul Sanders from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, said that the findings demonstrate the benefit of adequate potassium supplementation on prevention of vascular [hardening].

As humans get older, arteries stiffen and can cause heart problems. It also assured that a person has a heart attack every 40 seconds, and more than a person dies from a heart disease each minute. They found out that the arteries of those mice that they fed less potassium diet became harder. Such genes also help in maintaining the flexibility of artery.

Millions of people around the world suffer from pathogenic vascular calcification, also known as hardening of the arteries - most after reaching a certain age.

Chelsea star to reject huge new deal as he looks for transfer
Hazard, 26, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid after playing a crucial part in Chelsea's Premier League title triumph last season.

"Reduced dietary potassium intake has been linked to the pathogenesis of a variety of human diseases, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease".

Specialists conducted experiments on rats, which had a cardiovascular disease caused by food high in fat content. Portions rodents gave different, someone less, someone more. Also, the low-potassium mice had increased stiffness of their aortas, and high-potassium mice had decreased stiffness, as indicated by the arterial stiffness indicator called pulse wave velocity, which is measured by echocardiography in live animals. Mice were split into three groups and given varying levels of dietary potassium - 0.3 percent, 0.7 percent and 2.1 percent weight/weight, respectively. The mice were given either low, normal or high levels of potassium. They also help in moderating blood sugar level.

These effects suggest the transformation of VSMC into cells that possessed bone-like characteristics.

So the UAB researchers tested the effect of growing vascular smooth muscle cells in low-potassium cell culture. The first group received a high-potassium diet, the second one a menu with a medium quantity of potassium, and the third one had to consume low-potassium foods. Results in both of those systems supported the vital role for potassium to regulate vascular calcification through calcium signaling, CREB and autophagy.
