USA online privacy laws mandate that web companies require users to be at least 13 years old without explicit parental permission, but Amazon's terms of service are actually a little stricter, requiring anyone under 18 to get parental permission to use its services. The kid then receives an invite and they choose their own username and password.

Amazon launched a new kind of account specifically for teens. The teen can request the account and the parent can confirm via a text or email.

Order approvals are switched on by default, so if a parent wants to allow a teen to shop Amazon without each item being reviewed they'll have to explicitly disable this feature.
