Metro fares go up, commuters react sharply (Lead)

The Union Urban Development Ministry is considering reducing the Delhi Metro fares, which have already seen two hikes in the last five months.

The revised fare structure is as follows: up to 2 km - Rs 10; 2 to 5 km - Rs 20; 5 to 12 km - Rs 30; 12 to 21 km - Rs 40; 21 to 32 km - Rs 50; and for journeys beyond 32 km - Rs 60.

Commuters IANS spoke with said they paid more than Rs 10 on the first day of the hike.

Barring the minimum fare of Rs 10 for a distance of 0-2 km, which will remain the same, fares were hiked for all other slabs.

For a party that has been vehemently protesting the hike in Delhi metro fares, representatives of the Aam Aadmi Party attended just one out of 15 meetings held by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Board.

For example, Ravi Ranjan, who travels daily between Malviya Nagar and Noida Sector 16, used to pay Rs 32 for one-way ride. This is not a good thing.

Taking to Twitter, the DCW chief, Swati Maliwal wrote, "DCW survey on 2516 women reveals 97% women unhappy wid metro fare hike".

"The Delhi Metro fare hike will affect my budget by Rs. 700, but if we want facilities similar to America, then we'll have to pay", another metro commuter said. Congress has blamed AAP-led Delhi government for the hike besides Centre.

On 7 October, the central government told Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that it can not put on hold the proposed Metro fare hike unless state government agrees to pay almost Rs. 3,000 crore annually to DMRC.

The Delhi Assembly on Tuesday chose to set up a nine-member committee to look into the rationale behind the increase.

The survey revealed that around 61.57 per cent women said they would face severe issues in managing their household expenses following the fare hike.

Gopal Rai, a senior AAP leader said that AAP volunteers would launch the agitation across all city Metro stations at 4 PM on Wednesday and the protests will continue on Thursday and Friday. "People might shift to other modes of transport now", a Delhi Metro commuter told ANI. "Why did he not object to the decision to hike the metro fare?"
