U2 cancelled their St Louis concert amid fears that protests over the acquittal of a white police officer who shot dead a black man in 2011, might endanger fans of the Irish rock band.

The band doesn't want to risk anyone's public safety by having the concert, and so things are off, at least for tonight.

The statement said the cancellation was "the only acceptable course of action in the current environment".

According to prosecutors, Stockley, who is white, shot Smith, who is black, five times following a vehicle chase and then allegedly planted a gun in Smith's auto following the shooting.

However, over 20 arrests were made by Friday night, and 10 police officers sustained injuries by the end of the evening, according to The Associated Press.

St. Louis City and County police officers are working 12-hour shifts beginning today in response to expected protests.

Cops were preparing for another wave of protests Saturday.

During the pursuit, Stockley could be heard saying on an internal police auto video he was going to kill Smith, prosecutors said.

After falling down, people can be seen trying to help the lady, who was wearing red blouse and a skirt, but are pushed back by the police officers.

Smith was shot 5 times in his auto after trying to escape from Stockley and his partner who were following him on an alleged drug deal.
