The reality of the frontline in Raqqa

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have detained a US citizen who had been fighting with ISIS in Syria, a US military official told CNN Thursday.

We are aware of the report that a USA citizen believed to be fighting for ISIS surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces on or about September 12.

The decision to legally detain the man as a "known enemy combatant" comes as the Trump administration has been working to craft a detention policy, which could determine whether the USA will resume sending detainees to the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The State Department official added, "In general, we closely monitor all reports of USA citizens who may have joined groups to fight with or fight against ISIS".

And the US-led coalition carried out its own airstrikes in Deir Ezzor Wednesday, targeting ISIS fighters and vehicles. Earl Brown, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East.

The Defense Department and the State Department said that they were aware of the reports and had no information to share at this time.

US officials said they are working out what they will do with the man, if he is confirmed as an American.

USA officials have estimated that 40,000 foreign fighters have flowed to Iraq and Syria to join the Islamic State and other groups since the conflict there began.

Deir Ezzor has been a key base for ISIS since the group first captured a majority of the city back in 2014. European governments and others have said that any of their nationals captured should be returned for trial at home.

In June, a Virginia man who traveled to Syria to become a suicide bomber for Islamic State was convicted of providing material support to the militant group.

The warplanes struck as the SDF waged "heated and bloody battles" in the industrial zone on the eastern bank, seizing factories from Islamic State militants, he said.

"We consider it an insult to the Iraqi people".

The Russian- and US -backed campaigns against Islamic State in Syria have mostly stayed out of each other's way as the sides seek to avoid conflict, with the Euphrates often acting as a dividing line between the sides.
