The missile was launched just days after the United Nations Security Council stepped up sanctions against North Korea over its latest nuclear test. Analysts said markets had been expecting a reaction from Pyongyang.

THE Philippines on Saturday again appealed to North Korea to stop its acts of provocation and return to the negotiating table.

Itsunori Onodera, Japan's Defence Minister, has avoided discussing a pre-emptive strike on North Korea.

"The full range of capabilities are at our disposal against the threat from North Korea", Manning said.

In a press statement released on Friday, the 15 council members urged all United Nations member states to "fully, comprehensively and immediately" implement all relevant Security Council resolutions concerning North Korea, particularly the newly adopted Resolution 2375, which targeted North Korea's oil supply and textile exports, Xinhua news agency reported.

But officials in Japan who may have considered intercepting the missile faced two immediate constraints - the country's missile defences are limited, and the Constitution limits military action only to instances of self-defence.

The spokesman said the deliberate leakage of the information about tactical nuclear weapons by the Trump administration "coincides with its moves to impose heinous sanctions, pressure and military threat on the DPRK". In 2011, "Washington Post" reported a letter written by a former North Korean letter and sent to AQ Khan in 1998, stating that then Pakistan army chief Gen. Jahangir Karamat had been paid $3 million and asking for "the agreed documents, components, etc" be placed on a North Korean plane returning to Pyongyang, after delivering missile parts to Pakistan.

Following the J-ALERT warning, the operations of Shinkansen bullet trains and some other local trains, including subway systems in the areas covered by the alert, were temporarily suspended for safety reasons.
