Several other nursing homes were evacuated because of a lack of power or air conditioning, and workers scrambled to keep patients cool with emergency stocks of ice and Popsicles.

The death toll from Hurricane Irma is at least 24 in the U.S. - that number includes three deaths in Puerto Rico and four deaths in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In recent years the facility has been cited twice for violations related to federal requirements about its backup power capabilities.
