Singapore GP: Daniel Ricciardo bullish about Red Bull chances after fantastic Friday

Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull

Vettel was 11th in Friday's second free practice session, and he took a chunk out of one of the circuit's walls in the final pre-qualifying run-out on Saturday.

Max Verstappen qualified in second place ahead of Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo, with Kimi Raikkonen steering his Ferrari to fourth place ahead of Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Few of Vettel's 49 pole positions will have given the German driver as much pleasure as this one at the Marina Bay circuit, where he holds the record for wins (four) and podiums (six).

"And by letting people who are following me know, maybe that will encourage a couple of people to do the same thing".

All weekend, it looked like Red Bull Racing were dominating as their aerodynamic package seemed tailor made for the high downforce demanding street circuit.

"We knew that we would come here and it would be hard", Hamilton said.

"Since yesterday, we - well at least myself - was nowhere near to the Red Bull; today, without some mistakes, we could have [both] been ahead of them". I thought pole would be on, but we couldn't quite run the limit in the last qualifying. "Seb turned it on in qualifying but I'm looking forward to tomorrow", said the Australian.

Vettel cut a grim figure outside the Ferrari garage, reflecting on a night that did not go as planned.

Having clinched pole position and with his rival qualifying in fifth, Sebastian Vettel is perfectly placed to wrestle back the championship lead from Lewis Hamilton in Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix. With Hamilton having won three of the last four races to take the points lead for the first time all season, Vettel desperately needs a big result.

Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel finished ninth and 11th respectively, 1.9 and 2.2 seconds off the pace, though a slower auto impeded Vettel's fastest lap. Singapore Grand Prix in crucial for both Mercedes and Ferrari.

"I knew we had it in us".

Daniel Ricciardo was third in the second Red Bull, but could only improve by 0.022s on his second run. It's usually just a long long train. It was Ricciardo on top again though, with Verstappen behind and Hamilton third. Perhaps there was a bit of time in the last sector to find but in general I am very pleased with how the auto and I performed.

"It's generally been close everywhere we go, even when it's "this one will suit Mercedes", or "this one will suit Ferrari".

The other McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne was ninth while Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso-Renault - who will switch to Honda power next year and Sainz will join Hulkenberg at Renault - completed the top ten.
